'We're missing him': Take That make their debut as a trio on X Factor... two months after Jason Orange's decision to quit the band

Two months after the shocking news that Jason Orange was departing Take That, the band's remaining singers have stepped out for their first performance as a trio.

Former X Factor judge Gary Barlow made a return to talent show's London's studios with Howard Donald and Mark Owen for a live performance of their track These Days.

And after the audience cheered them through their dance-filled set, they spoke with host Dermot O'Leary, admitting that they were still adjusting to life in the band without Jason.

'We felt nervous about how people were going to react [to the three of them]. But the fans have been amazing.'
The singers looked sharp for their performance, wearing black suits with white accents - and dazzling white shoes - as they showed off their moves to a cheering audience.

They were supported by several dancers - clad in all-black - on the multi-coloured stage set.
Once the performance came to an end, judges Simon Cowell, Mel B, Cheryl Fernandez-Versini and Louis Walsh joined the audience in giving them a standing ovation.
Host Dermot then noted that Gary and his bandmates have 'still got the moves, prompting the former X Factor judge to quip: 'They never left.'

He added, over screams from the studio audience: 'It's brilliant being back. I've missed everybody, I really have.'
As well as picking their competition favourites - Andrea Faustini, Fleur East and the later eliminated Stevi Ritchie - the band also plugged their tour, which is set to kick off in April.
Earlier in the night, Labrinth took to the stage to entertain the crowd with his latest track Jealous.

Sitting on a darkened stage under a single spotlight, he played the piano as he sang his way through the newly-released track.
Also wearing a black-and-white ensemble, he advised the contestants to enjoy themselves 'as much as possible, because there are so many people wanting to do what you're doing right now', before naming Andrea as his favourite act.
Having already been whittled down to a quartet several years ago following the departure of Robbie Williams, Jason became the next one to bow out in September.

He said in a statement: 'At a band meeting last week I confirmed to Mark, Gary and Howard that I do not wish to commit to recording and promoting a new album.
'I have spent some of the best years of my life with Take That and I'd like to thank everyone who has been a part of my journey, including my bandmates, who I feel are like brothers to me.
'At the end of the Progress Tour I began to question whether it might be the right time for me to not continue on with Take That.
'There have been no fallings out, only a decision on my part that I no longer wish to do this.'

Take That caused a stir on the X Factor as they took to the stage in a world exclusive performance as a three piece.

Singing their brand new single These Days, released today, the band received a huge reaction for the audience, despite having lost two of their original members.

And the band have revealed that they are missing their ex-bandmate Jason Orange.

Speaking to X Factor presenter Dermot O'Leary about their time as a three piece, they said: "It's going fantastic. We're missing Jason though."


"We felt nervous about how people were going to react [to the three of them]. But the fans have been amazing."

Gary Barlow admitted he was backing Fleur East to go on and win the show this year, but Howard was a little more controversial.

"If I could go and see anyone live, I'd see Stevi," he laughed.

The band, originally a five piece, reunited in 2006 - although Robbie Williams was noticeably missing.

Robbie did join the group in 2010 for the band's sixth studio album Progress, but made it clear that his return may not be long-term.

In September this year, Jason Orange also announced that he was leaving the band.

"At a band meeting last week I confirmed to Mark, Gary and Howard that I do not wish to commit to recording and promoting a new album," said Jason in a statement.

"I have spent some of the best years of my life with Take That and I'd like to thank everyone who has been a part of my journey, including my bandmates, who I feel are like brothers to me.

X Factor results: Take That WOW with These Days! Gary Barlow etc mobbed at ITV!

Gary Barlow returned to the X Factor stage tonight and boy it was nice to see him back! The Take That star judged on the ITV show until this year but tonight he was there in his musical capacity and was on hand to perform his newest single for the studio audience and viewers at home.

Gary has rejoined with Howard Donald and Mark Owen, though they lost Jason Orange along the way, and the men recently released These Days as the lead single from their new album III, which will drop next month.

Tonight was the first time the band have performed on live TV in their new makeup and it seems that though they were smaller in number, they certainly haven’t lost any support and onlookers say there was quite the crowd outside Fountain Studios, waiting to greet the trio this evening.

Howard tweeted his fans saying:

“Bless all of you who have or are stood in the rain queuing at Xfactor. X”

The hunk was a little nervous about his big return though and added: “On @TheXFactor Tonight. Lordy Lordy!

1st live TV performance. I want me mum.”

The men emerged for their performance wearing the snazziest matching black and white suits. They might have been secretly nervous, but it definitely didn’t show! We have become so used to seeing Gaz on his own, in solo performances and stand alone concert, but it was so nice to see Take That as a collective tonight. Even if it was a little smaller than usual.

Even in their reduced form they appeared to be having so much fun and while Take That no longer fill a stage as well as they once did, the camaraderie and friendship between the boys, teamed with a seriously catchy song, made this one of the most enjoyable X Factor performances we’ve seen in a long time!

Also, we’re not ashamed to admit how much we’ve missed Howard’s funky dance moves! He’s one hot potato!

X Factor Results: Gary Barlow returns with Take That to perform These Days

Boy band-turned-man band Take That entertained the audiences on the seventh live Results Show for X Factor tonight, as they performed their new track These Days.

It was a poignant moment for Gary Barlow, as he made his comeback on the show which he used to be a judge on.

Joining his bandmates – Howard Donald and Mark Owen – on stage, the boys looked suave in black suits with white detailing, as they sang and danced for the audience. We wonder what it took to get Gary to show off his moves as he is notoriously sensitive about his prowess on the dance floor!

These Days, which is Take That’s first single as a trio, following Jason Orange’s departure, shows off a new side to the boys, with funky guitar riffs combining with a pop feel.

Asked how it felt to return to the show, Gary said: “It’s brilliant being back. Brilliant being back, it really is. I’ve missed everyone, I really have.”

Howard spoke about life as a trio now Jason Orange has left, and told Dermot: “It’s going fantastic actually, we miss Jason thought. But it’s going really well.Bit nervous but it’s going well so far.

“We felt nervous about how people would react, but the fans have been absolutely amazing, so thanks for that.”

And the third member of the trio talked about the boys’ plans to go on the road next year.

“It’s been a while, it’s been four years since we toured but we’re going on tour next year in April and hopefully people will come and see us.”

After that the guys were asked who they were bakcing to win, with Gary picking Over 25s act Fleur East, Mark going for either Fleur or Andrea Faustini, and Howard adding: “I’d say Andrea, but if it’s to go and see anyone live I’d go and see Stevi [Ritchie].”

Gary Barlow made a big return to The X Factor stage tonight in Take That's first proper live performance as a trio. The man-band were special guests on this evening's results show with a huge and colourful live version of their new single, 'These Days,' complete with some sensational (and awkward) dance moves. In short, it was brilliant.

Howard admitted that they miss Jason Orange: "It's going really well. We miss Jason, though. We miss him a lot."

Gary added that he was happy to be back on the show: "It's brilliant being back. I've missed everybody. I really have." (Aside: you're reading that quote in his voice, aren't you?)

After Dermot asked who they're backing to win, Howard joked: "If we're talking about who I'd go and see live, I'd see Stevi..."

Louis Walsh's face dropped, obviously.

To Take That’s legions of fans it came as a complete shock when Jason Orange sensationally announced he was leaving.

But his bandmates had been expecting it for some time.

It was actually the tail end of last year when Jason first told Gary Barlow, Mark Owen and Howard Donald to go ahead and make plans without him – and they have spent the past 12 months begging him to reconsider.

Speaking of the split for the first time since the announcement, Gary, 43, says they left the studio door wide open for Jason as they began work on a new album.

“We’ve known for a while that Jay was like, ‘I don’t know if I’m doing this or not,’” he says.

“At the end of last year we said, ‘We’re going to start, is that OK?’ You can see how you feel during the year.’

"We left a big space for him on the record.”

Finally, last month, the boys sat down for an emotional meeting and Jason told them face to face that he was leaving.

“We hit the point where we could do nothing else,” laments Mark, 42. “Then, it became real.”

A fortnight ago they got together as a foursome one last time to write statements to announce the news.

The group described it as a “sad day for us” and said: “Jason’s energy and belief in what this band could achieve has made it what it is today, and we’ll forever be grateful for his enthusiasm, dedication and inspiration over the years.”

Jason called the others his “brothers”, adding: “There have been no fallings out – only a decision on my part that I no longer wish to do this.”

It’s clearly devastating for the three lads that Jason didn’t change his mind. With Robbie Williams no longer involved, Howard refers to “what’s left of the band” and says of their upcoming releases: “Let’s hopes the fans are still there.”

After first forming in 1989, the group have been together on and off ever since with a few different lineups so they shouldn’t be a problem.

However, there have been rumours that Jason’s decision to go was related to a tax controversy surrounding the other three.

In May a judge ruled that the Icebreaker partnership Gary, Howard and Mark had been part of since 2010, along with their manager Jonathan Wild, was a tax-avoidance scheme.

Jason was not involved and when the announcement of his departure came only weeks after Gary made an apology, speculation of a link was rife.

Asked if that is what’s what’s behind it all , the boys chorus in unison: “No.”

Howard adds: “We’re all great friends. But he’s no longer in love with music, or recording it, or the whole process of it.”

They admit they did consider calling it quits. “It did cross my mind,” says Howard.

“But I would have encouraged the other two to carry on. But I love being in the studio creating music and touring.”

Mark says: “There was a time when we had to get Rob to come back.

"So we’re quite used to people saying they don’t want to do it any more.

"Eventually you kinda talk them round and send them flowers. We didn’t send Jason flowers, actually. That’s where we went wrong!”

However, they did invite him to listen to demos of their new album, III, including debut single These Days.

Howard says: “Me and Mark played it to him in the hope he’d think, ‘Yeah I’ll get on board’.”

Writing songs for the new record was clearly influenced by what was going on in the background.

“It was quite downbeat, and we needed to change it to bring more energy to it,” says Mark.

“I think Gary said: ‘We’re not writing a retirement record.’

“Then around May the three of us locked ourselves down for two or three weeks and started to play with sounds and for me that’s when we started for real.

"The energy was more positive. Now it’s one of our most upbeat records.”

Gary says the new album, due out on December 1, is “an amalgamation of the past eight years”.

They’ve worked with a selection of previous producers from different stages of their career.

Now that the trio are all in their forties it’s clearly a more mature sound than their early cheesy pop.

Gary and his wife of 14 years Dawn have children Daniel, 13, Emily, 11, and Daisy, four.

Mark and wife Emma have Elwood Jack, eight, Willow Rose, six, and Fox India, two. And Howard is dating illustrator Katie Halil.

But as Gary’s retirement comment implies, this is not scheduled to be the band’s final album.

“I could see us going on for another 15 years,” says Mark. Gary goes one better, stressing: “I could see us going in indefinitely.”

But however long it lasts, there will always be room for Jason or Robbie to return.

As Howard insists: “The door is always open.”

THESE DAYS

IT’S a new beginning for Take That — but not just in formation.

The trio’s "debut" single These Days sounds like nothing we’ve ever heard before from the boys.
It’s a fast-paced, foot-stomping song, which will come across great on the radio and even better on stage.
Super producer Greg Kurstin, who has worked with everyone from Katy Perry to Kylie Minogue, helped out. And you can hear his influence straight away.
From the Chic-style funk guitar riff, to the Pet Shop Boys vocal effects, it has pure pop written all over it.
It’s no wonder the lads are dusting off their dancing shoes and learning a routine to match it.

LET IN THE SUN

This is likely to be the lads’ second single from new album III.
And by the sounds of it, they seem to be gunning for their own Ibiza residency.
Let In The Sun is the song your dad would write if he was trying to get down with the kids.
It’s Mumford & Sons crossed with Calvin Harris.
Take That’s delve into the dance world is unsurprisingly cringe-worthy, but like all of their records it’s unquestionably catchy.

IF YOU WANT IT

The most 90s-sounding track from the four we got to hear.
It has their typical cheesy sound written all over it.
“Everything could be a little bit brighter” is the most notable line, perhaps referencing their recent struggles.
It's in no way a classic, but with big production and an uplifting chorus they won't struggle to get fans singing along.
Look out for it on bank adverts and BBC montages next year.

GET READY FOR IT

By far and away the best song from the new-look Take That.
The band wrote this for the soundtrack of forthcoming Brit flick Kingsman: The Secret Service, so stars Colin Firth and Michael Caine will know all the words by the time it’s released in February.
Thumping drums start off a huge intro, before it kicks in with Gary’s battle cry.
It is loud, euphoric and unmistakably Take That.
They clearly haven't forgotten how to write the perfect middle eight too.
When the boys last wrote a big-screen anthem — Rule The World for 2007 film Stardust — it became one of their biggest hits of all time.
Get Ready For It could easily do the same.

Despite Jason Orange's departure, Take That are hoping to release new music ''within weeks''.

The 'Patience' hitmakers stunned their fans earlier this week when they announced the departure of Jason Orange, but the group - Gary Barlow, Howard Donald and Mark Owen - are pressing on with plans to release a new record by the end of the year.
A source said: ''The first songs could be with fans within a few weeks. Fans are backing the boys to stay together.
''They're written a lot of the record already. The only thing stopping a comeback without Jason is if the results in the studio don't do justice to their musical legacy. They won't release anything substandard.''
However, insiders admit Jason was usually the band's ''quality control'' and not afraid to give an honest opinion on their finished tracks.
The source added to Metro newspaper: ''Jason was very encouraging about health and keeping fit. They'll miss that spirit.
''He was also key to the group's quality control. He'd always speak his mind if he thought something was rubbish.''
The 44-year-old singer is now planning to enjoy ''civilian life'' out of the public eye and has no plans to embark on a solo career.
The source said: ''Jason's just very private. He's made a lot of money through decent investments.
''Now he only wants to enjoy a civilian life. There are no big work plans for him in the pipeline.''
Meanwhile, Gary has thanked fans for their support following Jason's departure.

GARY BARLOW'S DIARY - August '99 last entry

Firstly, apologies that the August update is a little bit late. I've been travelling a lot lately (mostly Germany) and what with one thing and another I haven't had a chance to put pen to paper (not literally!).  

Anyway, August was the month for Roadshows. I ended up headlining a Red Dragon in Cardiff, Fox FM at Silverstone, GWR in Luton, Key 103's Mardi Gras in Manchester ( more about that fiasco later) and the Radio City Roadshow in Liverpool. I have to say that It was fantastic seeing so many familiar faces at the Roadshows - how do you always manage to get right to the front of the stage? It's impressive, I'll give you all that...  

I guess I should explain about the Mardi Gras in Manchester (much as I want to forget it), as my set was a complete disaster. The way the Roadshows work is that all the groups perform to backing tracks as there is no way that the event organisers can set up everyone's equipment so that you can play a fully live set as there is only 5 minutes changeover between artists. Anyway, to cut a long story short, for the first time ever, my backing track jumped and skipped all over the place because of a technical fault. Every time the track stopped, I tried to sing only to be interrupted by the sound technician trying to start the track again. This happened about 5 times and I have never been so embarrassed in my life. I apologise to all of you who made the effort to come and see me - what a nightmare!!!! Oh yeah, and cheers to all the newspapers who decided to make fun of me the next day saying that I can't sing live (nice!!!!!) If any journalists are in any doubt about my singing abilities they are welcome to come and see me for a one to one performance. Luckily, the City FM Roadshow which I did right afterwards was fantastic and the crowd were brilliant - there is a God!!  

In the middle of August I went off to film the video for 'For All That You Want' in Marlborough, England. I usually find shooting videos pretty boring but this one was top! The story is that a bunch of friends discover a deserted house whilst out on a walk that's full of old fairground equipment. We all start messing about with the equipment (what a hardship!) and then we stumble upon the Dodgem Cars. Apparently, I smile more in this video that in any other and I can tell you now that it's all down to the bumper cars. I love the Dodgems - in fact, the director couldn't keep me away from them - and all in all I had a brilliant day out which was a turn-up for the books.  

The other two exciting things that happened in August were going over to Amsterdam for a few days and the delivery of some new equipment for my studio at home. Firstly I'll talk about Amsterdam. I had to pick a place that I love so that the holiday programme could film me there. Well, it was tough choosing between Amsterdam and Venice, which are two of my favourite cities, but Amsterdam won the day. Basically when you watch 'Holiday Heaven', I'll be surprised if you see me doing anything other than eating because every corner that I turned led to one of my favourite restaurants (funny that!!). Mind you , the film crew made me cycle around the canals too and it was probably a good thing because I definitely needed the exercise. We love Amsterdam!!  

Lastly, but no means least, when I returned home, my new Euphonix studio equipment had arrive and I'm afraid to say that this event eclipsed everything else that happened during August. It is true to say that I was in seventh heaven as the new centre section for my mixing desk was being installed (sad, but true) and without sounding like a studio bore, I just love anything that enables me to produce better records. Luckily, my management company left me, undisturbed, for a few days so that I could familiarise myself with the new desk and as I hate reading instruction manuals, it probably takes me longer than average to bear.  

Anyhow, you'll be pleased to know that I have been inspired enough to write and demo six new songs already and as that's what this job is all about it can't be bad.  

In fact, If you don't mind, I've got a couple of hours spare now so I'll just nip back into the studio, but I'll come out again before my September update's due, I promise!! Actually, I'm going to have to, because with the release of 'For All That You Want' looming I'm going to have a lot of promo to do...

He's a nice lad is Gary Barlow...still lives with his mum and dad, even though he's a multi-millionaire pop star on the verge of making it big in America. Mind you, at 26 Gary felt it was time for a little independence. So while he shares his house on his 60-acre estate in Cheshire with girlfriend Dawn Andrews, his mum and dad have their own house in the same grounds.

Elder brother Ian also has his own place there - courtesy of little brother Gary, of course. "I love it there," he says. "I've been working non-stop lately but, whenever I've got a couple of days off, I go home to Cheshire. I go and see my mates, go down the pub. That's the brilliant thing about living at home. People don't see you as anybody different, so you actually go back to being you at home. And I love just being me."

Open Road, Gary's first solo album since leaving the hugely successful boy band Take That, is released on May 26th. His latest single Love Won't Wait which went straight to Number One in its first week of release, was written by Madonna. But Gary, who wrote six Top 10 UK hits for Take That and won four Ivor Novello Awards for his songwriting talents, isn't going to waste time worrying that other people share the credits this time around. "It's wrong to talk about songwriting ability being everything. Whitney Houston's never written a song in her life," he says. "It's about having a good song and getting on and doing it."

Hey everyone ! I'm back from 7 productive weeks in the US and I'm back on twitter !

I've had a break from twitter after someone hacked my account and some very upsetting and disturbing text was written

Over the Summer I've remembered that I have so many supporters, friends and fans on here so why let 1 person ruin all the fun

I want to apologise to anyone who was offended by the tax stories earlier this year.

With a new team of accountants we are working to settle things with all parties involved ASAP

We have been working since the new year on a new Take That studio album

We are extremely excited about it ! It has been 4 long years since the last one

It's so nice to be back in the band !

While in the US my first musical 'Finding Neverland' opened for previews in Boston. I even met a few faithful fans at the opening night !

It's been an amazing experience and our show is heading for Broadway in early 2015.

I'm looking forward to singing at Elton Johns 'End of summer' party on Thursday
